Around 80% of EV charging in Australia happens at home — and for good reason. No dedicated EV plan in your area? Now the honest caveats, because an EV plan can bite if you only read the headline number:
- Compare the whole bill, not just the EV rate. A 4.5c overnight window is no bargain if the plan charges 40c+ during the 4–9pm peak and your household cooks, heats and washes right then. Model your full usage before switching.
- Supply charges still apply, and they differ between plans — a high daily charge can quietly eat a chunk of the saving.
- You'll need a smart meter so the retailer can bill by time of day; if you don't have one, they'll typically arrange the upgrade.
- Check the window suits your charger. Six hours at 7 kW is ~42 kWh of headroom — ample. Six hours on a 10A portable is ~12 kWh, which may not cover a big day's driving.
- Solar changes the maths. If your export earns a ~5c feed-in tariff, self-consuming that solar into the car instead of buying 30c grid power is worth roughly 25c/kWh — often the best "rate" available to you, no plan required.
