Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to get the most out of Plugroo across Australia.

Getting started

What is Plugroo?

Plugroo is an Australian platform for finding, checking and sharing EV charging information. We bring together data from major networks — including Chargefox, NRMA, Evie and Tesla — alongside our own verification, so you can browse stations on an interactive map, filter by what matters, and check the details before you arrive.

It's built specifically for Australian driving, from CBD top-ups to long highway corridors.

Is Plugroo free to use?

Yes. Searching for chargers, viewing the map, using filters and the Route Planner are all free. Plugroo helps you find chargers — the cost of an actual charging session is set by the network operator and paid through their own app, card or payment terminal at the site.

Do I need an account?

No account is needed to search the map, apply filters or view station details. You only need to log in if you want to save favourites and keep your charging history synced to your profile.

Which parts of Australia does Plugroo cover?

Plugroo covers public charging across all states and territories — metro areas, regional towns and the major highway corridors that connect them. You can jump straight to busy areas like Sydney , Melbourne , Brisbane , Perth and Adelaide , or search any suburb on the map.

Can I use Plugroo in my language?

Yes. Plugroo is available in English, 简体中文, 繁體中文, 한국어, 日本語 and Tiếng Việt. Use the Language switcher at the bottom of any page to change it at any time.

Finding chargers

How do I find EV chargers near me?
  • Open the map on the Charging Stations page.
  • Tap the locate button to centre the map on you (allow location access when asked).
  • Pan and zoom, or type a suburb or city to browse stations in that area.
  • Tap any station marker to open its full details.
How do the filters work?

The Filters panel narrows the map to what you actually need:

  • Free only — stations with no session fee.
  • Fast charge — high-power DC chargers for quick top-ups on the go.
  • Toilets — sites with nearby amenities, useful on longer drives.
  • Connector & speed — match the plug type and kW your car supports.

Filters combine, and the map updates instantly — so you can, for example, show only free fast chargers with toilets nearby.

Which connector type does my EV use (Type 2, CCS2, CHAdeMO, Tesla)?
  • Type 2 — the standard AC connector in Australia, used by nearly all EVs for slower destination and home charging.
  • CCS2 — the dominant DC fast-charging plug for most newer EVs sold here (e.g. most Hyundai, Kia, BYD, MG, Polestar, BMW and Tesla models).
  • CHAdeMO — an older DC standard found on some earlier models such as the first-generation Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
  • Tesla — Tesla Superchargers; many newer V3/V4 sites are also open to CCS2 vehicles.

Check the port on your car, then use the connector filter to show only compatible stations.

What's the difference between AC and DC charging speeds?

Charging speed is measured in kilowatts (kW) — higher kW means faster charging:

  • AC (slow / destination) — around 7–22 kW. Common at shopping centres, hotels and home. Best when parked for a few hours.
  • DC fast — around 50 kW. A useful highway top-up, adding meaningful range in 30–60 minutes for most cars.
  • DC ultra-rapid — 150–350 kW. The quickest public option; compatible cars can add a large chunk of range in 15–20 minutes.

Your real-world speed depends on your car's maximum charge rate and battery state, so a 350 kW charger won't always charge a car limited to 100 kW any faster than a 150 kW one.

What information is shown on a station's detail page?

Each station page shows the connectors and charging speeds available, the operating network, price notes, access and parking details, nearby amenities, and one-tap directions. Where the network shares it, you'll also see live bay status.

How do I find free EV charging?

Turn on the Free only filter to show stations with no session fee — often found at councils, shopping centres and some destinations. Availability varies by region, so it's worth keeping a paid backup in mind. Our Free EV Charging in Australia guide explains where free charging is realistic.

Can I get directions to a charger?

Yes. Open a station and tap Directions — Plugroo hands off to your maps app (Apple Maps or Google Maps) for turn-by-turn navigation. On desktop it opens your maps service in a new tab.

Live availability & data accuracy

What do "available", "occupied" and "faulted" mean?
  • Available — the bay is reported free and ready to use.
  • Occupied — another vehicle is currently charging there.
  • Faulted — the charger is reporting an error and may be out of service.

Checking this before you set off helps you avoid a wasted detour to a busy or broken charger.

How live and accurate is the availability data?

We show live status whenever a network makes it available, and we clearly flag uncertainty when it isn't. Because status comes from third-party operators, there can be short delays or occasional gaps — so treat it as a strong guide rather than a guarantee. On a long trip, it's smart to have a backup charger in mind.

Where does Plugroo's charging data come from?

Plugroo combines data from major Australian networks — such as Chargefox, NRMA, Evie and Tesla — with our own verification and reports from drivers. This layered approach is what lets us flag uncertainty honestly instead of presenting every data point as gospel.

Why is a charger showing as occupied or offline?

Usually it's simply in use by another driver, undergoing maintenance, or temporarily reporting a fault to its network. Occasionally a status is just slow to update. If you arrive and the real situation is different to what's shown, a quick issue report helps us correct it for the next driver.

How do I report a blocked bay or broken charger?
  • Open the station's detail page.
  • Tap Report an issue .
  • Choose what's wrong — blocked bay, broken charger, or incorrect details.
  • Submit. It takes seconds and helps keep the data accurate for every driver.

Route Planner

How does the Route Planner work?
  • Open the Route Planner .
  • Enter your start and destination.
  • Plugroo maps charging options along the corridor so you can see where to top up.
  • Open any stop for details, then save the ones you like to favourites.

How should I plan charging stops on a long drive?

A few habits make Australian road trips stress-free:

  • Plan to arrive at each charger with a comfortable buffer rather than running the battery near empty.
  • On long regional stretches, line up a backup charger in case your first choice is busy or offline.
  • Charging is fastest in the lower part of the battery, so shorter, more frequent top-ups can be quicker overall than one long charge to 100%.
  • Allow extra range for highway speeds, hills, heat and headwinds, which all increase consumption.
Can I plan a trip using only free chargers?

You can combine planning with the Free only filter to favour no-cost stops. Free DC fast chargers are still limited on some corridors, so we recommend keeping a paid backup on longer routes. The Free EV Charging in Australia guide has the detail.

Account, favourites & history

How do I save a charger to favourites?

Make sure you're logged in, open a station, and tap the star icon. Saved stations appear in your Favourites for quick access — handy for your regular commute or local fast charger.

Do my favourites and history sync across devices?

Yes. As long as you sign in with the same account, your favourites and recent activity stay tied to your profile — so they'll be there whichever device you use, including the mobile app.

How does Plugroo handle my location and privacy?

Location access is used only to centre the map on you, and it's optional — you can browse perfectly well without it. For full detail on how we handle data, see our Privacy Policy and Cookies Policy .

Mobile

Is there a Plugroo mobile app?

Yes. The native Plugroo app is available for iPhone and Android. You can also use the full Plugroo experience — map, filters, live status, station details and the Route Planner — in your phone's browser at plugroo.com.au .

How do I use Plugroo on my phone right now?

Open plugroo.com.au in Safari or Chrome on your phone. Everything is touch-optimised, so you can search, filter, check availability and get directions straight away — no download needed.

Can I add Plugroo to my home screen?

Yes, and it gives you app-style one-tap access while the native app is on the way:

  • iPhone (Safari) — tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen .
  • Android (Chrome) — tap the menu (⋮), then Add to Home screen .
Location won't work on my phone browser

Your browser needs permission to share location. On most phones you can re-enable it via the padlock or site-settings icon next to the address bar, then reload the page. You can always search a suburb manually instead.

Web app

Which browsers does the web app support?

Plugroo works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on both desktop and mobile. For the best experience, keep your browser up to date — there's nothing to install.

The map won't centre on my location in the browser

Click the padlock icon in the address bar, allow Location for plugroo.com.au, then reload and tap the locate button. If you'd rather not share location, just search a suburb or city instead.

Do I need to install or sign up to use the web app?

No. Browsing the map, filtering and viewing station details work straight away with no install and no sign-up. An account is only needed if you want to save favourites and history.

Troubleshooting

A station isn't showing up — why?

First, check whether a filter — like Free only or a connector type — is hiding it; clear your filters and search again. If a real station is still missing, or its details look wrong, please let us know so we can update it.

The map or data won't load
  • Check your internet connection — the map needs data to load current stations.
  • Refresh the page, or try a private/incognito window.
  • Clear your browser cache if an old version seems stuck.

If it keeps happening, contact us with your device and browser so we can investigate.

The live status looks wrong or out of date

Status comes from the charging networks and can lag by a few minutes. Refresh to pull the latest, and treat live status as a strong guide rather than a guarantee. If reality on the ground differs, a quick issue report helps us fix it fast.

I can't log in

Double-check you're using the email you signed up with and that you're online. If you've forgotten your details, use the reset option on the log in page. Still stuck? Contact us and we'll sort it out.
