Most of us open Google Maps out of habit, and these days it does show EV chargers — plug types, charging speeds, even live availability for some networks. For a lot of everyday driving, that's genuinely enough. But EV charging asks more of a map than petrol ever did: you need to know a charger actually exists, that it's working right now, that it isn't blocked, and what it'll cost before you commit to the drive. What Google Maps does well for EV drivers

Let's be fair — Maps has come a long way, and it gets a lot right:

  • It's already on your phone. No extra download, no new account, and navigation you already trust.
  • An EV charging layer. Search "EV charging" and you'll see public stations with connector types, charging speeds and user reviews.
  • Plug-type filtering. Set your connector (CCS2, Type 2, etc.) so incompatible stations drop out of your results.
  • AI review summaries. It distils dozens of user comments into a quick read on what a site is like.
  • Real-time status for some networks. Where an operator feeds live data to Google, you'll see whether ports are in use.
  • Charging stops on a route. In compatible cars with Google built-in, Maps estimates your battery on arrival and can add charging stops automatically.

For local errands and familiar routes, that combination is often all you need. The trouble starts when you rely on it for the decisions that actually cause range anxiety.

Where Google Maps falls short for EVs

Maps is a general-purpose map with EV features bolted on, and it shows in a few important ways — particularly in Australia, where many of Google's live-data partnerships don't yet reach.

  • Missing and incomplete stations. Plenty of chargers that genuinely exist — smaller networks, destination chargers, newer or community sites — simply don't appear, or show outdated details. If a charger isn't on the map, you'd never know to use it.
  • Patchy real-time availability. Live status only works for networks that share their data with Google, and in Australia that's a minority. Very often you'll see no status at all — "unknown" — which is no help when you're deciding whether to drive there.

  • Deep EV routing needs the right car. The full "battery on arrival and auto-add stops" experience mostly applies to vehicles with Google built-in — not every EV driver using the phone app.
  • Limited EV filtering. Filtering by maximum power, network, reliability or amenities is basic compared with purpose-built tools.

None of this makes Google Maps bad — it makes it a navigation app that happens to show chargers, rather than a tool built to help you choose one.
