The Nissan Leaf is one of the most quietly successful EVs in Australia. There are thousands on the road — Gen 1 imports from Japan, Gen 2 ZE1s, the e+ 62 kWh versions — mostly owned by people who just want a sensible, affordable electric car that works.

The problem isn't the car. It's the ecosystem around it. CHAdeMO — the DC fast-charge standard the Leaf uses — is slowly being squeezed out of new rollouts in favour of CCS2. Most charger-finder apps were built for overseas networks. And after 8–12 years, the original battery in early Leafs is doing what all batteries do: getting tired.

The 4 pain points every Leaf owner knows

If you've owned a Leaf for more than six months, you've hit at least three of these:

CHAdeMO is getting rarer

Most new fast-charging sites are built CCS2-only. You can't assume the next charger on the highway will plug into your car.

Battery degradation is real

Gen 1 Leafs lose meaningful range every year. A 24 kWh car that did 130 km when new might manage 70 km after a decade.

Regional Australia is patchy

An hour outside a capital, charger density drops — and the data on a lot of overseas-built apps stops being reliable.

"Available" can't be trusted

A charger marked available might be offline, occupied, or unable to deliver full power. You find out only after the detour.

Finding chargers: what actually works for Leafs

Most generic EV apps treat every plug equally. As a Leaf driver, you need to filter the world differently.

Filter by plug type — every single time
Your Leaf uses Type 2 for AC and CHAdeMO for DC fast charging. CCS2 won't work. The single most useful thing an app can do is hide everything that isn't CHAdeMO or Type 2. In Plugroo this is a one-tap filter, and we default Leaf owners to it.
Lean on Type 2 destination charging
For longer Leaf trips, AC destination charging often beats hunting for DC fast chargers. Caravan parks, motels, shopping centres and council carparks are everywhere, cheap (often free), and work perfectly with your car. Plan trips around overnight AC top-ups and you barely need CHAdeMO.
Check live status before you commit
A 20-minute detour to a broken charger is the worst part of EV ownership. Live status — pulled from network APIs and verified by community check-ins — turns "I hope this works" into "I know this works."
Know the pricing before you plug in
Per-kWh pricing ranges from free (some council and shopping centre AC) to around $0.85/kWh on premium DC. For a Leaf, that's a $15–25 difference per session — real money across a full trip.

When it's the battery, not the charger

The numbers tell a fairly clear story for owners who already love their Leaf: a battery upgrade can be roughly half the cost of a new entry-level EV, with comparable or better range. You also keep the car you know — the suspension you've settled into, the boot you've already optimised for the dog.
